US-POLITICS-DIPLOMACY
The United States has expressed its opposition to China using sanctions to influence the diplomatic choices of other countries. China recently announced sanctions against officials from Paraguay and Belize for maintaining diplomatic relations with Taiwan.

The US State Department said Tuesday that it opposed China’s use of sanctions to pressure other countries. The statement came after China announced sanctions against government officials from Paraguay and Belize, citing the two countries’ continued formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan. The episode again highlights the diplomatic allies Taiwan maintains face diplomatic pressure, as well as the importance of the Taiwan issue in US-China relations.

According to a Reuters report, China imposed sanctions on Paraguayan Communications Minister Gustavo Villate and Belizean Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca. The measures include restrictions on entering Hong Kong and Macao, as well as limits on transactions and cooperation with relevant institutions and individuals in China.

Paraguay and Belize continue to maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan. China has long claimed that Taiwan is part of its territory and opposed other countries maintaining official diplomatic ties with Taiwan. Taiwan, meanwhile, continues to seek greater international participation and preserve its existing diplomatic relationships.

The US statement opposing the use of coercive measures to influence other countries’ diplomatic choices, while reiterating support for the countries involved, indicates that Taiwan’s diplomatic situation extends beyond cross-strait relations. It is also intertwined with the positions of the United States and other countries on the international order, sovereign choices and diplomatic autonomy.

It remains to be seen whether China’s sanctions will have a significant practical impact on the two countries’ diplomatic and economic ties. Because the measures primarily target specific officials, their direct economic effect may be limited. The episode could nevertheless deepen diplomatic friction between Beijing and countries that support Taiwan’s international space.
