The Taiwan Weighted Index closed down 960.65 points at 48,341.31 on October 13. Selling pressure on global tech stocks and market concerns about the prospects of AI investment became the focus of investors' attention.

Taiwan's stock market weakened on Tuesday (13), with the benchmark Taiex falling 960.65 points, or 1.95%, to close at 48,341.31. Turnover was about NT$1.13 trillion. Technology shares came under heavy selling pressure as investors continued to focus on the outlook for artificial intelligence (AI) investment, international semiconductor stocks and the impact of developments in the Middle East on energy prices.

According to a Central News Agency report, the Taiex fell more than 1,200 points during the session, briefly testing the 48,000-point level. TSMC closed down NT$50, or 1.97%; MediaTek fell NT$100, or 2.16%; and Delta Electronics dropped NT$125, or 6.58%. Some plastic, shipping and financial stocks moved higher against the broader trend.

Pressure also came from overseas technology stocks. A Reuters global markets report said investors were increasingly concerned about intensifying competition in the AI chip industry and whether massive AI investment could continue to generate returns, putting Asian technology stocks broadly under pressure.

The decline reflected the impact of volatility in global technology stocks on Taiwan's market. Taiwan's semiconductor and electronics supply chains are closely tied to global investment in AI infrastructure. If markets reassess the growth prospects of related companies, share prices could remain volatile in the short term.

However, a single-day decline does not mean that AI demand has already reversed. Investors will need to monitor corporate earnings, semiconductor orders, capital spending plans by major technology companies, as well as international interest rates and energy prices to assess the market outlook more fully.
